Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Supervisor of Landscape and Grounds position. The Assistant Supervisor of Landscape and Grounds is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $29.00 per hour. The Assistant Supervisor of Landscape and Grounds supports the efforts of the Landscape and Grounds Department to ensure proper maintenance of all horticultural aspects on the campus are carried out. The assistant supervisor supervises day-to-day operations of a grounds team responsible for the maintenance, repair, and improvements of the grounds, athletic fields, and grounds structures. This position also assists in the oversight of the maintenance and repairs to campus operation's vehicles and equipment as well as assists with coordinating the campus waste and recycling program. The assistant supervisor participates in performing general labor duties as needed.
The position is designated as providing essential services and may be required to report to work, or remain on duty even though the College is closed. Our work is central to student life and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule is required. Due to the nature of the position, some work outside normal operation hours is required and must respond to emergencies as needed.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Supervision and oversight
Supervise the Landscape and Grounds staff and casual or student workers performing day-to-day functions including but not limited to equipment operation, outdoor event setup, waste removal services, lawn mowing, leaf removal, horticultural maintenance, equipment maintenance, athletic field maintenance, sanctuary maintenance and ice operations at the ice rink
Coordinate with outside contractors
Train a diverse group of staff on regulatory guidelines and safety procedures working closely with Environmental Health and Safety to monitor work progress and process by developing work schedules and assignments ensuring standards are met
Perform general landscape and grounds tasks as needed
Support Campus Partners with special services and event support
Administrative
Manage all grounds material including maintain inventory
Process invoices
Administer and approve work orders
Work with town officials with paving and landscape projects that border town property
Qualifications:
Required
Valid Driver's License
Valid CDL 'B' (including valid DOT Medical Card,) MA pesticide applicators license and Hoisting License, or acquired within the first six months of employment in the position
Successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
CORI check
3-5 years of experience in turf management and general landscaping
Experience leading and supervising a team
Demonstrated knowledge of botany, horticulture and arboriculture
Demonstrated knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM)
Demonstrated leadership, project management, problem solving and negotiation skills
Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability practices and initiatives
Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and time-management skills including the ability to plan, organize and multi-task when priorities change frequently
General knowledge of accounting and budgeting practices
Experienced in the operation of motorized vehicles including trucks, tractors, chainsaws, general landscaping tools, etc.
Ability to work with landscape design drawings
Knowledge and experience in recycling, composting and water conservation
Proficiency and ability to develop management tools for grounds
Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test
Experience with or commitment to working with a diverse community
Preferred
Experience in overseeing large institutional, corporate or golf setting
Associate degree in landscape / Turf Management or related field
3-5 years' experience managing teams
Bachelor's degree in landscape / Turf Management
DOT Requirements for CDL (operation of a vehicle in excess of 26,000 pounds)
Completion of CDL Driver Application
Able to read and speak English
Employment verification for preceding 3 years
State driving record
Driver History Check for preceding 3 years
Complete a road test
21 years or older
DOT physical certifying the operation of vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds
Drug and alcohol test
