Job Description

Summary

The Scientific Content Manager will play a critical role in the creation and application of a comprehensive data governance strategy supporting JAX Data Science (JDS). Key activities include data annotation and curation to enable the collection, analysis, and integration of information and results. Advanced knowledge of mouse as an experimental organism, broad understanding of database principles, and skills with computational analysis techniques and data interpretation are required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create data management structure and develop data management policy.
  • Establish and maintain the Jackson Laboratory data inventory and identify key external data sets.
  • Lead overall data curation efforts, acting with both strategic and tactical focus in support of JDS.
  • Communicate with data generators, developers, researchers, scientific services, and other stakeholders as needed to create and shape data sets.
  • Understands and has the ability to present tradeoffs between the cost of data resource development versus the value of doing so.
  • Utilizes evidence to drive business decisions that balance stakeholder philosophy with sound and practical business judgment.
  • Leads a team of scientific curators or others as needed.
  • Assists with the development and growth of the curation team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field is required.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience as a data curator or with archival data analysis.
  • Extensive (8 or more years) experience in scientific curation, collection management, or museum work, with a track record of success in acquiring, organizing, and maintaining scientific collections.
  • Strong knowledge of scientific principles, methodologies, and practices relevant to the curation and management of scientific data and collections of data sets.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Proficiency in collection management software and database systems, as well as standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office suite).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities, with a passion for supporting the professional development of junior staff and promoting a culture of excellence and innovation.

The salary range is $111,488 - $186,656. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
