About the opportunity

SWCA is seeking a Project Restoration Ecologist for SWCA's New England operations to contribute to the growth of our ecological restoration practice (specifically in the leadership of our invasive plant management practice). The ideal candidate will be interested in developing a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise with commercial acumen and leadership. Prior experience is necessary in the planning, design, and implementation of invasive plant management programs in upland and wetland environments; hiking trail construction; lake and pond assessment and management; habitat conservation planning and restoration; and the implementation of ecological restoration in wetland or other sensitive resource areas for public and private clients.

This position is a regular, full-time, hourly position, reporting to the Ecological Restoration Team Lead. The position offers the flexibility to work from a home office, or our Westborough or Amherst, Massachusetts offices with travel to projects throughout Massachusetts and southern New England.

This requisition can hire at two levels:

  • Assistant Project Restoration Ecologist; typically, with up to three (3) years of relevant experience and expertise
  • Associate Project Restoration Ecologist; typically, with up to five (5) years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish

  • Work in a team setting to complete invasive plant management (including herbicide application), restoration plantings,bank/soil stabilization, trail construction, wetland enhancement, vegetation monitoring, and data collection
  • Effectively communicate with other project team members and follow instructions well
  • Implement and complete tasks and responsibilities delegated by Field Supervisors
  • Take positive action and accountability for assigned work
  • Perform herbicide application for invasive plant management, as needed

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental related discipline, such as: environmental studies, environmental science, biology, ecology or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience supporting ecological restoration project work; as normally acquired from three (3) years of industry related experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office products.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting ecological restoration project work; as normally acquired from five (5) years of industry related experience.
  • Experience leading teams in ecological restoration or similar work (landscaping, wetland construction, manual invasive plant management, etc.)
  • Additional Information:
  • Ability to travel up to 60% of the time regionally to project sites in New England.
  • Salary will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

An employee in this Amherst-based position can expect an hourly rate of $26.25-$33.25/hour for the Assistant Project Restoration Ecologist position and an hourly rate of $29.25-$37.75/hour for the Associate Project Restoration Ecologist position. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
